AGM - Thurs 23rd April 09

AGM – this year’s AGM was held at Derriford on April 23rd. During the business side of the meeting, copies of the plans for the new ward on Level 3 were looked at. The Hospital Trust is paying for the main project which is great as that frees PDLF up to help pay for all the extras that will make the patients stay (whether in the Day Care Unit or on the ward) a more comfortable experience.
Dr. Hannah Hunter gave an informative talk on stem cell transplants. This was ideal as it tied in with viewing the plans and the need for the upgrade. Currently patients needing a volunteer unrelated transplant have to travel to Bristol. Future plans include this group of patients having their care here on the new ward.

Jean Whitfield Memorial Walk

Every year at this time, Mike Whitfield organises a walk in memory of Jean Whitfield. This year was the 24th and on May 16th a group of folk donned their weatherproof gear and enjoyed a 9 mile walk around the Brentor area. We were treated to a free cream tea (undid all the good work but those home baked scones were too good to refuse) from Fiona and Barry at Lydford Station Farm. The sponsorship money will be in later this month and I will put the details on the web site. We are grateful to all who took part especially those who travelled some distance and to Mike for organising such a lovely walk. Photos...

Concert by City of Plymouth Concert Band - 27 Feb 09

The City of Plymouth Concert Band and the Sunday Choir held a concert in Peverell Park Methodist church and gave a generous £225 to the fund. Another concert was held in St.Neot church, near Liskeard. Mike Roe and friends gave us a show that had something for everyone with songs from the theatre, the psalms and Gilbert and Sullivan. Over £500 was raised that evening. We appreciate all the work and practise in preparing for these concerts as well as the final results.

A New Year Concert - 24 Jan 09

Michael Roe and friends sang at St. Neot Church (near Liskeard) -A most enjoyable evening with songs from the shows, the psalms and a bit of Gilbert and Sullivan as well. We are grateful for the use of the church at St. Neot and for the money raised - £500.

Plymouth half-marathon

A few people ran on the fund’s behalf but the only details I have are those of Jodie Wild’s. Jodie  ran a very good time (2hours and 32 minutes) on a very hot day (unbelievably hot according to Jodie) and raised over £500 for the fund – very well done to all and thanks for running.

AGM, Celebrating 25 Years - 11th April 08

The AGM was well attended by supporters and to mark the occasion Dr Archie Prentice, founding consultant, gave a keynote talk on the changes in the management of patients with haematological conditions over the last 30 years or so. It was most certainly educational, inspiring, and food for thought. Food for the stomach came in the form of a cake made by Sarah Peck. It both looked and tasted great.

Some members who have been longstanding and outstanding supporters of the charity were presented with an engraved clock. These were generously purchased by Dr Adrian Copplestone.
